ProstAware, the nonprofit group founded by robotic prostate surgeon Scott D. Miller, M.D., of Georgia Urology, will conclude a busy and successful season of prostate cancer awareness as the beneficiary of former Atlanta Brave and Atlanta Falcon Brian Jordan’s Bottoms Up 5K on Oct. 22 at Chateau Elan Winery and Resort in Braselton.

The day’s events also include a men’s health educational symposium at 11 a.m., which will be conducted jointly by ProstAware and Georgia Urology. Jordan’s father, Alvin, passed away as a result of prostate cancer and, consequently, his charitable efforts are aimed at creating awareness for prostate cancer.

“It is great to have someone as respected as Brian Jordan, championing this important cause,” Dr. Miller said. “We are thrilled to be partnering with Brian and his organization and hope that his name and efforts help more men to check their risk factors for developing prostate cancer so that we all can save more lives.”

Alvin Jordan took pride in helping children to succeed in life by playing sports. A steelworker in Baltimore, he was a coach and mentor to children.

“He was a humble, quiet leader,” Brian Jordan said. “He passed on Jan. 1, 2014, after battling prostate cancer, just two days shy of his 77th birthday. He was the kind of man who spent a lot of time looking after others and this run/walk is about encouraging men to take some time to look after their own health.”

This event concludes a successful few weeks for ProstAware and for Dr. Miller in highlighting the issue of prostate cancer and creating more awareness for the disease, which is the second-leading cause of cancer death in Georgia. On Sept. 9, ProstAware held its eighth annual Blue Ties Luncheon, which raised a record $125,000. Legendary University of Georgia football coach Vince Dooley and his wife Barbara, a former radio host and candidate for elective office, served as the keynote speakers for the event, which also was attended by Hesiman Trophy-winning running back George Rogers and by Brian Jordan. September was prostate cancer awareness month.

Scott D. Miller, M.D., was the first urologic laparoscopist in the state of Georgia. Specializing exclusively in laparoscopic and robotic urologic surgery, he performs approximately 200 procedures of this type annually, along with numerous robotic kidney procedures. He actively develops new surgical techniques and shares his methods and results with surgeons around the world. His most recent development is LapaRobotic Surgery™ (LapaRobotics™). The technique involves the melding of two separate but related surgical techniques–laparoscopic surgery and robotic surgery. Dr. Miller has been board-certified by the American Board of Urology since 1997. Dr. Miller has been selected as one of America’s Top Doctors for Cancer by Castle Connolly and recognized as a Top Doctor by Atlanta magazine since 2009.
