Boeing Engineer William Harkness Honored with SAE International Steven M. Atkins Ability and Achievement in Science, Engineering, and Technology Award

SAE International announces that William Harkness of The Boeing Company is the recipient of the 2016 Steven M. Atkins Ability and Achievement in Science, Engineering, and Technology Award.

Harkenss is a former member of Boeing’s Payloads Concept Center and Advanced Future Concept team, developing unique solutions that push the frontier of what's possible inside Boeing.

SAE International announces that William Harkness of The Boeing Company is the recipient of the 2016 Steven M. Atkins Ability and Achievement in Science, Engineering, and Technology Award.

Harkness currently works as an engineer in support of Boeing’s enterprise technology strategy. He is a former member of Boeing’s Payloads Concept Center and Advanced Future Concept team, developing unique solutions that push the frontier of what's possible inside Boeing. He is Boeing's first Industrial Systems Engineering Research Center Fellow and holds several patents.

Harkness co-founded the Boeing Employee Ability Awareness Association (BEAAA), Boeing United States Business Leadership Network (USBLN) chapter, and the Boeing Deaf Employees and Friends (BDEAF). In addition, he has received Boeing’s Diversity Change Agent Award three times for his work. He says that his passion is to bring in and introduce the latest and greatest ideas that combine humanism and technology.

Established in 2011, the Steven Atkins Award recognizes the significant technical achievements brought about by innovation, leadership and inspiration of employees with disabilities working in the aerospace engineering industry. It also demonstrates the deeper scope and reach of SAE International to mobility engineering professionals. The award was established to recognize aerospace employees with disabilities who, through their technical achievements, innovation, leadership and inspiration, have contributed to the aerospace industry. The award honors Steven M. Atkins, Vice President, Product Integrity and Functional Excellence, Boeing Commercial Airplanes.
