South Florida Addiction Expert Karen Corcoran-Walsh Project Nominated at the U.S. Psychiatric Mental Health Conference

Florida (PRWEB) October 27, 2016 -- Local addiction expert Karen Corcoran-Walsh’ owner of two leading South Florida teen and adult substance abuse and mental health treatment centers) research abstract was presented to the 29th Annual U.S. Psychiatric and Mental Health Congress Conference and Exhibition Psych Congress in San Antonio, Texas, on October 22, 2016. Titled “Metamorphosis of Change: Adolescence through Adulthood”

The report, details the treatment plan implemented for a dual-diagnosis substance abuse patient who transitioned from adolescence into adulthood with the integration of music therapy and other therapeutic modalities. A poster was created to visually depict the research.
Corcoran-Walsh, CAP, ICADC, MFT, ASAM, was assisted in the project by James Hughes, Ph.D., LMHC, CAP, CCJS. Psych Congress is considered to be the leading independent mental health and continuing education conference for advancing Psycho-Pharmacology and Wellness.
Corcoran-Walsh owns and runs Inspirations for Youth and Families teen treatment center as well as its adult counterpart Cove Center for Recovery. Both dual-diagnosis facilities treat individuals struggling with substance abuse, such as alcohol or marijuana abuse, as well as mental health issues like depression, anxiety, and trauma.
“We examined Ethan, an adolescent patient with substance dependence and mental health diagnosis to determine the effectiveness of an integration of music therapy for this patient’s treatment plan,” said Corcoran-Walsh. “Upon Ethan’s successful completion of 50 days of adolescent treatment, his 18th birthday passed. Ethan decided to continue treatment in an adult residential program. Ethan demonstrates an ability to substitute prior drug use and self-medicating behaviors with music and coping skills necessary for a drug-free adult life.”
