Auger & Auger Announce Fall 2016 Winners of Disabled Scholar Award
Charlotte, NC (PRWEB) November 01, 2016 -- The attorneys at Auger & Auger are proud to announce two winners of their Fall Disabled Scholar Award. This is a bi-annual scholarship awarded to college students who have persevered to overcome their disabilities to achieve exceptional results both in and out of the classroom.
Due to the high number of qualified applicants, the firm chose to award a scholarship to two winners. The first is Hugo Concha, a student at Stony Brook University. When Hugo was just 6 years old, he was diagnosed with papillary carcinoma and had to undergo a 13-hour surgery to remove most of the mass. Though he lost his ability to speak for awhile, he continued living a normal life, at least until he was 16.
At age 16, Hugo was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. To defeat cancer this time, he underwent extensive chemotherapy and radiation. This treatment has taken a toll on his body. He finds it difficult to walk and impossible to run and cannot lift more than 50 pounds. Yet, he maintains a bright outlook on life, and plans to attend Cornell Medical School to earn a degree in clinical anesthesiology.
The second winner is Hayden Lovelace. When Hayden was 14, she was diagnosed with Stargardt’s Disease, a juvenile form of macular degeneration. This untreatable condition caused her to lose her central vision, forcing her to change how she lives her life. Rather than throwing in the towel, however, Hayden overcame her obstacles to achieve goals many thought impossible.
This fall, Hayden began her freshman year at the University of Mississippi in Oxford in their pharmacy program, with a goal to earn her Doctorate in Pharmacy. Though she requires special attention and materials, such as large-print textbooks and handouts, she knows she can have a rewarding career in pharmacology. She encourages all those facing similar difficulties to push forward.
Herb Auger, founding partner at Auger & Auger, says, “We are proud of Hayden and Hugo for chasing their goals despite the difficulty, and are glad we could help them do so.”
