The Role of Dietitians in Early Patient Recovery

In the first several weeks of recovery, a bariatric surgery dietitian serves two important roles.

The first role is to facilitate a safe transition from a liquid diet to solid foods as a patient recovers from surgery. This process (i.e., a liquid diet to a soft foods diet to a solid foods diet) is crucial for wellness and can prevent serious complications. An experienced dietitian can provide crucial information about what to consume and what not to consume to help patients avoid discomfort and side effects.

The second role is to ensure patients are meeting their daily nutritional goals once they've returned to eating solid foods. This may mean recommending certain kinds of foods to add more essential vitamins and minerals to the patient's diet.

The Role of Dietitians in Long-term Weight Management

Once a few months have passed, a dietitian role changes. At this time, a dietitian considers the patient's rate of weight loss and how that patient can continue to lose weight at a healthy, reasonable pace. A dietitian supports the patient on his or her bariatric journey, suggesting foods, providing dietary tips, and pointing patients to resources that can help with weight management.

Ms. Cardona is available to patients for long-term follow-up care, which increases the chances of lifelong success. Patients who are approaching their first year after weight loss surgery or are well into their second year after bariatric surgery can benefit from Ms. Cardona’s careful attention to their needs.

Developing a Weight Loss Surgery Plan Based on a Patient's Needs

A good dietitian is an important part of any patient’s custom bariatric surgery plan, which is why Ms. Cardona is a welcome addition to the Tijuana Bariatric Center team. By using state-of-the-art equipment and focusing on the individual, the practice is able to offer exceptional weight loss surgery results that can change someone's life for the better.
