Unemployment Drops in 58 Percent of Metro Areas, Up in 36 Percent
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) November 03, 2016 -- Unemployment rates decreased in 58 percent of metropolitan areas within the United States, increased in 36 percent, and remained the same in 6 percent of areas, according to a report released by The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics on Wednesday, November 2, 2016.
The Metropolitan Area Employment and Unemployment report for the month of September 2016 revealed that unemployment rates were lower in 224 out of the 387 metropolitan areas, higher in 141 areas, and unchanged in 22 areas. The national unemployment rate for the month was 4.8 percent, similar to the unemployment rate in September 2015. Overall, a total of 190 metro areas had September jobless rates below the national rate, 184 areas had rates above it, and 13 areas had rates equaled the national average.
In September, Sioux Falls, South Dakota had the lowest unemployment rate at 2 percent, while El Centro, California, and Yuma, Arizona, had the highest unemployment rates in the country at 22.7 percent and 20.9 percent, respectively. Comparatively, only 26 metro areas had jobless rates of less than 3 percent in September, while 3 areas had jobless rates of 10 percent or higher.
The largest over-the-year decrease in unemployment occurred in Yuma, Arizona, dropping 3.8 percentage points since September 2015. Conversely, Casper, Wyoming and Erie, Pennsylvania, experienced the largest jobless rate increase over the year, jumping up 1.9 and 1.8 percentage points, respectively.
