Greenberg Traurig’s Obiamaka Madubuko Recognized as 2016 Trailblazer by the Nigerian Lawyers Association

Madubuko, a Litigation and Compliance shareholder in the New York office of global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP is the recipient of the Nigerian Lawyers Association’s(NLA) 2016 NLA Trailblazer Award. The annual NLA merit awards gala took place on October 29, at the 630 Second Ballroom in New York City, with keynote speaker Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan.
According to the Nigerian Lawyers Association, “the Trailblazer Award recognizes distinguished individuals who have not only demonstrated success in their field, but have also demonstrated a strong commitment to community service.” The NLA is the leading association for Nigerian legal professionals in the United States and its principal goal is to advance the professional needs of its growing members and to provide leadership and advocacy for the legal needs and interests of the Nigerian community in the United States and around the world. While most members are of Nigerian descent, Nigerian citizenship is not a requirement for membership.
Madubuko, a first generation Nigerian-American, focuses her practice on anti-corruption and fraud matters and advises U.S.-based companies doing business in international markets, with a focus on emerging markets including those in Africa. She advises companies on a host of compliance and transactional due diligence issues arising under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), UK Bribery Act, the Dodd-Frank Act, Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC) and other global trade regulations, and also advises clients on cybersecurity defense and data breach response. She assists clients with internal investigations, risk assessments and independent audits, as well as drafting, evaluating and updating corporate policies to ensure compliance. Madubuko is also an experienced litigator, representing clients in complex civil and criminal litigation matters in various federal and state courts across the nation. Madubuko’s litigation experience spans many industries including aerospace and defense, consumer products, energy and mining, financial services, health care, intellectual property, manufacturing, media and entertainment, real estate, securities, specialty chemicals, technology and telecommunication, and white-collar crimes.
Madubuko is currently on the board of Practicing Attorneys for Law Students, where she mentors young lawyers, law students and high school students interested in pursuing careers in law. She is a Steering Committee Leader for the American Bar Association’s International Anticorruption Committee, as well as Vice-Chair of the American Bar Association’s Africa Committee. She was formerly on the board of the Metropolitan Black Bar Association, and has an active pro bono practice where she represents clients in domestic violence, immigration and asylum cases.
