The surgical population for joint replacements is getting younger. Patients are interested in getting home as soon as possible, and returning to as high an activity level as possible.

Active adults needing hip, knee and shoulder replacement demand the convenience of outpatient surgery and now recent advances in anesthetics and surgical technique make it possible for patients to recover comfortably in their own home

The Joint Commission announces Presidio Surgery Center, affiliated with Sutter Health’s California Pacific Medical Center, as the first in California to be recognized with the prestigious Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval® for Advanced Certification for Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement. The advanced certification is for Joint Commission-accredited hospitals, critical access hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers seeking to elevate the quality, consistency and safety of their services and patient care.

“Active adults needing hip, knee and shoulder replacement demand the convenience of outpatient surgery and now recent advances in anesthetics and surgical technique make it possible for patients to recover comfortably in their own home,” said Robert Mayle MD, Medical Director and orthopedic surgeon at the Presidio Surgery Center. “Presidio Surgery Center, meets this demand by providing individualized concierge care from the moment a patient books a surgery through to the one-year follow up.”

Having patients recover in the comfort of their own home reduces exposure to hospital acquired infections, and according to studies reduces the likelihood of an unplanned hospital readmission. The cost to patients is generally significantly less than at a hospital.

This new individualized concierge care model represents a significant improvement for patients requiring hip, shoulder and knee replacement. Patient satisfaction is extremely high, and success stories abound. Patient Stan Gabriszeski recently had both hips replaced, recovered at home and was hiking the Teotihuacan pyramids in Mexico weeks after his surgery.

Presidio Surgery Center underwent a rigorous onsite review on October 19-20 2016. Joint Commission experts evaluated compliance with advanced disease-specific care standards and total hip and total knee replacement requirements, including orthopedic consultation, and pre-operative, intraoperative and post-surgical orthopedic surgeon follow-up care.

“Achieving Advanced Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement Certification underscores the commitment Presidio Surgery Center has to provide care in a safe and efficient manner for patients,” said Wendi Roberts, executive director, Disease-Specific Care Certification, The Joint Commission.
