Telos Corporation Named Finalist for 2016 Citizenship Awards by Washington Business Journal
Ashburn, VA (PRWEB) November 15, 2016 -- Telos® Corporation, a leading provider of continuous security solutions and services for the world’s most security-conscious organizations, today announced that it has been selected as a finalist for the Washington Business Journal’s 2016 Citizenship Awards. As part of the Corporate Philanthropy Awards, the Citizenship Awards honor partnerships between local businesses and nonprofits that demonstrate positive outcomes for both organizations. Telos is being recognized for its involvement with the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), an organization dedicated to providing compassionate care to all those grieving the death of a loved one serving in our Armed Forces.
Telos has been a proud supporter of TAPS since 2011. Throughout the last five years, Telos has been a presenting sponsor of the annual TAPS Honor Guard Gala, organized participants for Team TAPS events and hosted a golf tournament with 100 percent of the proceeds going directly to TAPS. Additionally, through strong partnerships with Monumental Sports & Entertainment Foundation and the Washington Capitals, Telos has sponsored the Courage Caps campaign that raises funds and awareness for TAPS among sports fans.
Through these and other efforts, TAPS board and Telos CEO and chairman John B. Wood, who currently serves as Chairman of the board of directors at TAPS, have steadfastly expanded its funding base over the last five years by introducing new companies, large and small, to the TAPS mission. This focus on long-term financial commitments has allowed TAPS to spend less time on fundraising and more time focused on the mission of caring for the families of our fallen heroes.
“TAPS is an easy charity to support – they have the highest Charity Navigator rating possible and are good stewards of each dollar they receive,” said Wood. “Even as war efforts have drawn down, the need for TAPS services has gone up due to the alarming rate of suicide deaths in the military. Currently, nearly 30 percent of the families coming to TAPS are survivors of suicide loss. Companies should be doing more to help TAPS and the families of our fallen military.”
TAPS was founded by Bonnie Carroll, the military widow of Army Brigadier General Tom Carroll. Carroll lost her husband in a C-12 plane crash in 1992 and found solace and support in sharing her experience with other military families. As a lack of national support programs for grieving families of fallen soldiers existed at the time, Carroll decided to create her own so that no other family would suffer in solitude again. Since 1994, TAPS has provided comfort and hope 24 hours a day, seven days a week to surviving military families through a national peer support network and connection to grief resources, all at no cost to families.
“Telos has been a steadfast partner to the families of America’s fallen. They have risen to answer our call time and time again, and have selflessly given of their time and talent for the more than 60,000 loved ones at TAPS,” said Bonnie Carroll, president and founder of TAPS and 2015 Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher Distinguished Civilian Humanitarian Award recipient. “On behalf of our families, we are delighted the 2016 Corporate Philanthropy Awards honor Telos as a finalist for its annual Citizenship Award."
Citizenship award finalists will be recognized at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. on November 17. For more information, please visit http://www.bizjournals.com/washington/event/135832/2016/2016-corporate-philanthropy-awards#register
