Penguin Computing Announces Scyld Cloud Workstation Support for Intel® Visual Compute Accelerator
Salt Lake City, Utah (PRWEB) November 15, 2016 -- Penguin Computing, provider of high performance computing, enterprise data center and cloud solutions, today announced support for Intel®’s Visual Compute Accelerator as a 3D graphics accelerator for Scyld Cloud Workstation, a clientless 3D accelerated remote desktop solution.
“Supporting Intel’s Visual Compute Accelerator is consistent with our strategy of driving Scyld Cloud Workstation across a wider range of platforms for our customers,” said Victor Gregorio, Vice President and General Manager of Cloud Services at Penguin Computing. “We are realizing exceptional density and impressive outcomes implementing Intel’s Visual Compute Accelerator. For example, we can host more than 1,000 simultaneous graphics accelerated sessions in a single Penguin Computing Tundra Open Compute rack.”
Scyld Cloud Workstation provides secure, easy remote access to Linux and Windows workstation-class desktops through standard web browsers - eliminating the need for client-side installations and changes to firewall policies. Scyld Cloud Workstation offers significant time savings by removing the requirement to download large data files by moving pre- and post-processing to the cloud for highly efficient HPC workflows.
“The rapid adoption of cloud-based HPC solutions is driving the need for 3D accelerated remote desktops,” said Al Diaz, VP and general manager, Product Collaboration and Services Division, Data Center Group, Intel Corporation. “By supporting Intel VCA, Penguin Computing is able to deliver a very cost effective remote desktop solution.”
Intel’s Visual Compute Accelerator brings 4K high definition media processing capabilities to platforms based on the Intel® Xeon® processor E5 family. The Intel Visual Compute Accelerator integrates three Intel Xeon processors E3 with Intel Iris™ Pro graphics and Intel Media Server Studio-enabled hardware accelerated video processing into a PCIe card form factor that fits into Intel Xeon processor E5-based servers.
“With the rise of cloud computing, the requirement for high-density remote desktop solutions is a critical focus for us,” said Thomas Ruge, CEO and Founder, Colorado Code Craft, who partners with Penguin to deliver Scyld Cloud Workstation. “What’s unique about this Scyld Cloud Workstation is the capability to run highly-interactive user applications, such as CAD and HPC apps for viewing and rotating 3D data directly in the cloud.”
In September, Penguin Computing announced Scyld Cloud Workstation 3.0, which provides true multi-user remote desktop collaboration for cloud-based Linux and Windows desktops. The announcement included a range of new features including improved quality of service intelligence for Scyld Cloud Workstation - ensuring that the user experience of a Scyld remote desktop feels like a local workstation.
