PeerWell Partners with Lyft to Offer Safer Rides to Surgery and Rehab
San Francisco (PRWEB) November 16, 2016 -- Today, PeerWell, whose PreHab mobile platform helps patients prepare both physically and mentally for surgery to recover faster, announced a new partnership with Lyft, Inc., the fastest growing on-demand transportation service in the U.S., to offer safer rides to surgery and postoperative appointments for episodes of care that fall within bundled payments – starting with joint replacement surgery.
“Consumers are so overwhelmed by the stack of instructional materials they receive before surgery, that simple things like arranging a ride to the hospital are commonly overlooked,” said Manish Shah, CEO of PeerWell. “Our partnership with Lyft will provide an easy and seamless way for patients to set up transportation right from the daily checklist they receive that counts them down to surgery.”
Through the PeerWell platform, patients will be prompted to prearrange safe, reliable transport to their scheduled surgery enabled by Lyft’s rideshare platform. PeerWell, known for pioneering PreHab for patients undergoing surgery, will now include transportation scheduling at select hospitals across the country. For the first time, patients getting ready for major surgery can run through PreHab exercises, get doctor-approved nutrition plans and prearrange a safe ride all through their smartphone.
“Working with a leader in digital health like PeerWell furthers our commitment to connecting people and communities through better transportation. Access has been a longstanding barrier to quality healthcare and this partnership aims to break-down those barriers,” said Gyre Renwick, Head of Enterprise Healthcare Partnerships at Lyft.
This news comes on the heels of recently published data that showed that a Lyft ride scheduling program for nonemergency medical transport by CareMore Health System exceeded 80 percent enrollee satisfaction.
“Joint replacement patients are in no condition to drive for weeks after their procedure,” said Dr. John Tiberi, orthopedic surgeon at Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic, a world leader in the diagnosis and treatment of orthopedic and sports medicine injuries and illnesses. “Offering the ability to schedule Lyft rides in a patient’s PreHab checklist improves their experience, helps keep them safe and engages them in the logistics of their care.”
Evidence shows that better patient preparation substantially reduces care costs for joint replacement patients. In 2014, a study was published in the Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery that showed that just one to two hours of pre-operative patient preparation reduced episode of care cost by $1,215.
