Year Up New York Celebrates Tenth Anniversary with Alumni Career Workshop hosted by New York Life Insurance
New York, NY (PRWEB) November 17, 2016 -- Celebrating ten years of success in providing access to opportunity for low-income young adults, the nonprofit Year Up New York will host an alumni career fair in partnership with New York Life on Thursday, November 17, from 6 pm to 9 pm at the company’s headquarters.
The workshop will facilitate professional discussions between Year Up corporate partners and Year Up New York alumni about how they can continue advancing in their careers. Kathleen Navarro, New York Life Vice President & Chief Diversity Officer, will speak to attendees regarding the need to develop potential career paths for young adults.
New York Life recently announced Year Up as an exclusive partner for the #FirstJob Compact— a commitment from businesses to implement best practices for recruiting, hiring, and supporting Opportunity Youth – out-of-school, out-of-work young people.
“We are proud to host an event that brings together career-minded young adults with executives from companies who are seeking their skills and talent. It is a win-win for all involved.” said Kathleen Navarro, Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer, New York Life.
“We’re thrilled to host an event that will allow Year Up’s Empowered, Professional, In-Demand, Career Ready – what we call EPIC – talent to meet with executives from a number of top corporate partners including New York Life, JPMorgan Chase, Citi, Bank of America, and Northwell Health,” said Executive Director of New York, Jon Haseltine. “In addition, our current class of interns and graduates will have the chance to speak with companies like Mashable and organizations like York College that are also looking to tap into this skilled talent pipeline.”
Year Up provides low-income young adults, ages 18-24, with six months of technical and professional skills training followed by a six-month corporate internship at companies like New York Life. Eighty-five percent of graduates are employed or attending college fulltime within four months of completing the free program, with average starting salaries of $36,000/year.
Year Up New York’s Executive Alumni Board worked with the Year Up New York Leadership Council and Advisory Board to organize the Career Workshop as part of their mission to close the Opportunity Divide. Their goal is to foster a collaborative and active network that supports Year Up alumni, while providing an avenue for giving back to the organization.
