Lice Spies, The Latest Shepherd Certified Clinic To Battle “Super Lice”
Edmonds, WA (PRWEB) November 19, 2016 -- Lice Spies is the newest addition to the list of Shepherd Certified head lice awareness and control centers servicing Western Washington. It is helping to fight the growing problem of “Super Lice” through education and safe, non-toxic, pesticide-free head lice treatment and removal options.
It seems like there are more occurrences of head lice today than ever before.
Twenty years ago, popular over-the-counter treatment options including pesticides such as pyrethrin and permethrin, were almost 100-percent effective at killing lice and their eggs (nits). Today, the efficacy of these pesticides has decreased to about twenty-five percent according to the September 2016 issue of Pediatric Dermatology [Source: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/pde.12982/full
Stronger prescription-based pesticides such as lindane can be obtained from a physician, but lindane comes with severe health warnings and can be quite costly if insurance denies coverage. The EPA has banned all uses of lindane in the U.S., however, the FDA still approves lindane as a treatment option for head lice. It is illegal to use this product on a family pet, but it is legal to use it on a child to treat head lice (except in California where all uses of lindane are banned).
Years of pesticide use and misuse in the treatment of head lice, have created bugs (“Super Lice”) that have built up a resistance to the chemicals. Lice are amazing insects that have survived the test of time. They have been referenced in the Bible as one of the 10 plagues in the Book of Exodus, have been found on ancient Egyptian mummies and in prehistoric North American burial grounds. Humans have been battling these “super” creatures for what seems to be an eternity.
Unfortunately, there is no product on the market that is effective at killing 100 percent of lice or nits. “If there was a magical solution, lice would not be a problem!” says Katie Shepherd, founder of Lice Solutions and the Shepherd Institute in West Palm Beach, Florida.
And the problem is growing. The CDC now estimates 6 - 12 million people to be infected with head lice per year in the U.S.

“I am so excited to be on this journey to help educate and inform people on all things head lice. There is a lot of information out there: some of it good, some of it not-so-good. When you are dealing with the enormous stress of head lice, it’s hard to wade through it all. My hope with Lice Spies, is that we become a trusted resource and partner for families seeking comfort, knowledge and safe and effective treatment options for head lice.”
