Transforming Youth Recovery’s New Study Examines Recovery Support Offered on Community College Campuses
Reno, NV (PRWEB) November 21, 2016 -- Transforming Youth Recovery announced today the release of a new study that looks at the type of support currently offered to students in recovery from substance use disorders on community college campuses in the United States. Only 6 verified and 3 unverified community colleges with recovery support were identified; this pales in comparison to the 170+ four-year colleges nationwide that provide recovery support services.
Recovery Support in and Around Community College Campuses in the U.S. & Recommendations for Building Capacity is available free of charge on the Transforming Youth Recovery website. The study found that, with approximately 1,200 community colleges in the U.S. and only 6 verified on-campus recovery support efforts identified, it is likely that there is a need being woefully unmet. This unmet need is, in part, due to the historical approach of community colleges to emphasize classroom-based education and assume students are receiving non-academic services in places beyond the community college.
For students in recovery from substance use disorders who commonly face a disruption in education, a community college is a common place to begin reclaiming academic goals, which means it is also a place where individuals in recovery could greatly benefit from dedicated recovery support services. In developing and offering recovery support services on campus, community colleges could increase the protective factors that contribute to student success leading to increased retention, academic performance, and community engagement.
Among those community colleges currently offering recovery support services and interviewed as part of this study, no campus felt they had adequate resources to develop a sustainable program that met the needs of their campus. As a result, Transforming Youth Recovery is launching a pilot grant program called “Bridging the Gap” to learn what happens when schools initiate funded capacity building efforts on their campuses.
