The New Symfony Lens Corrects Problems for Cataract Patients - Now Available in Alabama

Dr. Danny Lee, M.D., of the Laser Eye Center of Huntsville, Alabama has been inserting the new FDA-approved Tecnis Symfony Intracocular Lens on Alabama patients. He says the lens can let many cataract patients see both up close and far away without glasses almost immediately after recovery from surgery.
“These lenses are truly effective and very high tech,” said Dr. Lee. “Where once most cataract patients had only long distance clarity, now they can see clearly at most any focal length.”
He also says patients express less trouble with glares and halos often reported in more traditional cataract implants.
“Patients seem thrilled,” Dr. Lee stated, “especially my more active patients who want to play sports or those who just don’t want to have to carry around a pair of reading glasses.”
A cataract is a cloudy area on the lens of the eye. Focusing becomes a problem because this cloud will scatter the incoming light making everything very hazy. During cataract surgery, the damaged lens is replaced. Glasses were often needed because in traditional cataract surgery the replacement lens only offered one fixed focus. Most people choose long distance clarity. The Tecnis Symfony Intracocular Lens offers a varying focal length.
“I cannot say you will never need glasses,“ Dr. Lee explained, “but from what I have seen, dependence on reading glasses is greatly reduced after surgery.” Incidentally, many patients with cataracts have complained of the need to frequently change glasses prescriptions.
According to the American Optometric Association, most cataracts develop in people over age 55, but can occasionally occur in children and adults of any age.
Dr. Lee says though age is probably the number one reason for cataracts we should eliminate smoking and reduce exposure to ultraviolet light to reduce our chances of developing cataract symptoms.
