Pine Manor College Launches a New Speaker Series, The Inspire Program, with Deval Patrick as Inaugural Speaker
Chestnut Hill, MA (PRWEB) November 25, 2016 -- [Chestnut Hill, MA, November 2016] Deval L. Patrick, the first person of color to be elected Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, will be the inaugural speaker for Pine Manor College’s new speaker series, the Inspire Program. The program is designed to share with students and the greater community the inspirational journeys of individuals who have beaten the odds by overcoming significant challenges in their lives and who have then gone on to achieve meaningful accomplishments. The first Inspire Program event will be held on Monday, November 28, at 6:00pm in Founders Hall, Ferry Administration Building, and is open to the public.
“We are excited to bring the Inspire Program to our community, it is intended to offer inspiration to many in our diverse student body,” said Pine Manor College President Tom O’Reilly. “The program will encourage and motivate our entire community as we prepare our students for successful careers, and we see no better person than Governor Patrick to kick it off.”
Born to and raised by a single mother on the South Side of Chicago, Governor Patrick earned a scholarship to Milton Academy in Massachusetts in the eighth grade. Though he would face cultural adjustments and racism, Patrick persevered and was accepted into Harvard College, the first member of his family to attend college. He graduated from Harvard with honors in 1978, traveled on a Rockefeller Scholarship and ultimately returned to attend and graduate from Harvard Law School, also with honors. After graduating, Patrick practiced law with the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund and later joined a Boston law firm, where he was named Partner at the age of 34. In 1994, President Bill Clinton appointed him as the United States Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, where he worked on issues that included racial profiling and police misconduct. After a short stint in the corporate world, he was elected to two terms as Governor. His efforts as Governor resulted in significant improvements in public education, increased support of the Biotech industry, and the passing of landmark environmental legislation that made Massachusetts a national leader in energy efficiency.
