Study Suggests Vitamin D May Help Treat Respiratory Viruses
United Kingdom (PRWEB) November 30, 2016 -- An international study has discovered that taking Vitamin D can have a potential impact on respiratory viruses by as much as 40%, according to a recent article on dailymail.co.uk. Elderly patients, who took significant dosages of the vitamin (often obtained through sunlight) were up to 40% less likely to develop lung and respiratory infections, claims lead researcher Adit Ginde, from the University of Colorado
Not only is this promising news for proponents of Vitamin D, it is a major asset in the fight against the growing strains of antibiotic resistant viruses, often attributed to the over consumption of antibiotics to treat viruses. It is even believed that the rise of “superbugs” (antibiotic resistant viruses) will cause as many as 10 million deaths by 2050.
Ginde’s study followed 107 senior citizens, averaging 84 years old. Of those 107 individuals, 55 received high doses of vitamin D, while the remained received significantly lower doses. The study lasted one full year. Researchers found that those taking the significant doses of Vitamin D, where significantly less likely develop acute respiratory infections.
In the study, Ginde states that “After studying these patients for a year, we found a 40 percent reduction in acute respiratory illness among those who took higher doses of vitamin D.”
