Violet™, Wi-Tronix Smart Event Recorder, Ready for Production
Bolingbrook, Illinois (PRWEB) November 30, 2016 -- Wi-Tronix announces production release of Violet™, the industry’s first real-time streaming event recorder of record hardware and software solution.
An event recorder of record is the device onboard locomotives and other transportation vehicles commonly known as the “black box.” The event recorder of record collects and preserves critical system data of an asset such as speed, GPS location, and system health. The preserved data is crucial in investigations to understand accidents, derailments, and “near-miss” situations. This information is used to understand the cause of incidents and create measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
In accident investigation situations today, an event recorder (ER) must be recovered, removed from the asset, and brought to a lab to extract information from the device’s crash-hardened memory module.
In cases where the ER is not immediately accessible, damaged, or cannot be found, investigations are severely impacted, delayed, or altogether inconclusive because of the lack of data.
Wi-Tronix developed a solution that would ensure preservation of a locomotive’s data and eliminate the need to physically retrieve the ER device to view data. The company’s innovative solution is Violet.
Violet offers streaming locomotive ER data populating in real time on a secure, cloud-based website. Event recorder data of moving locomotives populates on the user’s screen in real time.
The device pulls data like speed, GPS location, Positive Train Control (PTC) messages, camera image thumbnails, videos, and fuel levels and sends the information to the Violet website in real time. The information on the website can be easily accessed by railroad personnel with proper credentials from any computer or mobile device.
With the locomotive’s ER and critical data populated in real time on the secure cloud-based website, railroads’ asset data is preserved, so information is available from anywhere at any time to assist in accident investigation or daily operations.
The Violet Onboard Platform (hardware) serves as the locomotive’s event recorder of record. Violet is certified to 49 CFR 229.135 and Appendix D of Part 229 and is capable of recording up to 2,000 signals from a variety of sources including:
• Locomotive Interface Gateway (LIG)
• Positive Train Control (PTC)
• Legacy Event Recorder
The hardware combines an event recorder, digital video recorder (DVR), locomotive data acquisition recording system (LDARS), fuel monitoring device, Wi-Tronix Wi-PU™, and crash-hardened memory module in a single box.
Though Violet’s data fusion technology, users remotely access the Violet software’s streaming, real-time ER and PTC data using their web browser.
Data fusion allows railroads to access their PTC data and to create previously untapped business value from their PTC investment. Railroads can remotely monitor onboard faults between multiple systems, resulting in rapid deployment of information to PTC desks. This feature helps to significantly reduce impacts on network velocity.
Violet provides one cohesive view of the locomotive’s operations and various signals. No downloads, no files, and no separate viewer software are necessary to access data. Only valid Violet users can view the data on the software, so critical data cannot be transferred to unauthorized personnel, improving railroads’ data security.
“Violet has been built from the ground up by the world’s experts in event recorders and locomotive systems integration. It will only continue to get smarter,” says Chad Jasmin, Wi-Tronix Vice President Customer Strategy. “As technology advances, Violet advances with it.”
Wi-Tronix is accepting orders for Violet and will begin full production in Q1 2017. Contact Wi-Tronix at 1-888-WI-TRONIX for more information.
