IVHP Uses Accordion Health’s Analytic Horsepower to Improve Star Ratings and Deliver Member-Specific, Timely Interventions

Inter Valley Health Plan is using Accordion Health to improve medication adherence rates and bolster Star Ratings. In less than one year, IVHP’s outreach efforts are now 50 percent more effective, which has resulted in an increase in medication adherence scores and the elevation of its Star Rating during the next cycle.

Inter Valley Health Plan (IVHP), a Medicare Advantage plan that serves 23,000 members in Southern California, has chosen Accordion Health, provider of high-precision analytics for risk and quality platforms, to enable IVHP to use the data at its fingertips to improve medication adherence rates and bolster Star Ratings.

IVHP, like other Medicare Advantage plans, participates in the Star Rating program used by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to measure how well plans perform in quality and performance metrics, including medication adherence. Plans earning four-star ratings or higher qualify for federal bonus payments of an additional five percent per year, per member.

IVHP was looking for ways to increase its Star Rating, but was challenged with limited internal analytics and staff. They partnered with Accordion Health to gain greater insight into how they could more effectively implement outreach efforts that would improve medication adherence rates, impact Star Ratings and, ultimately, improve the lives of IVHP members. In less than one year, IVHP’s outreach efforts are now 50 percent more effective, which has resulted in an increase in medication adherence scores. And, IVHP is on the path to elevating its Star Rating during the next cycle.

They can now see, in real time, direct correlations between their activities and patient outcomes, and fine tune team workflows to focus on activities that will make the biggest patient and Star Ratings impacts.

As a result of the partnership with Accordion Health, IVHP has seen an average decrease of 2.81 percent in HbA1c levels among diabetic members who previously had HbA1c levels greater than nine percent, and also improved their diabetes medication adherence by 10 percent. With this insight, IVHP has begun to change the design of its benefits to embrace the needs of its members.
