“The Road To Restoration”: an informative and enlightening book for those who believe that salvation is an everyday trial, not a one hour a week showing of hands. “The Road To Restoration” is the creation of published author, Thomas Fitzhugh Sheets, seventy-one-year-old semi-retired businessman.
Tom begins, “Perhaps you are familiar with the brass ring that you could reach out for, and grab, on the old carousels. If you grabbed that brass ring you were rewarded with a free second ride on that carousel. “
Published by Christian Faith Publishing, Thomas Fitzhugh Sheets’s new book discusses how the brass ring in the Christian Faith has become eternal life. When people are taught that at the moment of belief they possess eternal life, they will to some degree stop reaching for that brass ring. While writing "The Road to Restoration" Tom came to believe that the brass ring should represent a restored relationship with God. Because of their disobedience, Adam and Eve were kicked out of paradise, and this broken relationship must be made right before anyone may "eat from the tree of life and live forever". Therefore, to suggest that belief, and some rhetoric, will gain readers the keys to the kingdom seems most inadequate. The only remedy for "disobedience" is "obedience" and should be the brass ring that one continually reaches for in their faith journey.
Belief (conversion) is step one in that journey, but to suggest that eternal life is the next step, and all righteousness follows is, for Tom, inconceivable. The childlike faith that Jesus demands of one is not out of fear of death, or for any reward, but only a devoted loving obedience to the Father. It is this relationship that gains one the keys to the Kingdom. A right relationship with God is the righteousness that He demands and this book is the road that Tom traveled to reach that conclusion.
The Bible is the revelation of God's plan to restore the relationship with mankind that was lost in Eden. Eternal life is the goal, but is only reached by a journey that focuses on this restored relationship. "Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness", speaks to this dual purpose. Any attempt to make salvation achievable without including the righteousness that God requires of us is a distortion of scripture.
The journey that leads to this restored relationship has many milestones on it. God's promises to Abraham; Jesus, the fulfilment of those promises; and The Holy Spirit as promised by Jesus, prompts one to that right relationship with God the Father.
Sheets concludes by saying, “These are the most important milestones to me and also make my understanding of God's plan of restoration a most important milestone on my journey.”
