More than 100,000 attorneys practice law throughout the state of Florida, but only about 4,800 have earned board certifications – a little over 300 of those are board certified in marital and family law.
The Florida Bar began certifying attorneys in 1982 in order to help the general public choose a suitable attorney. The certification process is entirely voluntary, but attorneys must have practiced law for at least five years, shown a substantial involvement in their field, pass a stringent examination, undergo a series of peer review assessments, continue to educate themselves in their chosen field, and receive approval from the Florida Supreme Court in order to qualify.
