Panopticon Labs Urges Video Game Industry to Self-Regulate on Cybersecurity Before Government Intervenes
Columbus, OH (PRWEB) December 15, 2016 -- Panopticon Laboratories, the world’s first and only cybersecurity company for video game publishers, today announced the release of its second whitepaper, entitled Avoiding Regulation: Why the Video Game Industry Must Develop Cybersecurity Standards Before Lawmakers Intervene. The whitepaper is available for download at https://www.panopticonlabs.com/resources/#white-papers.
2016 has been a devastating year for cyber attacks against online video games. In just the previous 12 months, DDoS attacks have severely disrupted the player experience and economics of some of the world’s most popular games, including World of Warcraft, Overwatch, and Diablo 3. Video-game specific malware, known as Steam Stealer, was discovered to infect more than 77,000 Steam player accounts per month, leading to massive account hacking. Comprehensive money laundering schemes, in which cyber criminals transform virtual items and currency into real-world profits, proliferated on the Gray Market.
“History will look back on 2016 as the year in which the video game industry began to recognize that it was a primary target for cyber attack,” said Matthew Cook, co-founder of Panopticon Labs. “Financially motivated cyber criminals have shifted their efforts to attack video games because they face very little resistance from players and publishers. If the video game industry doesn’t unite quickly and enact enforceable cybersecurity standards on its own, then it’s only a matter of time until the FTC or Congress imposes regulations designed to protect players. History suggests that such government intervention will have many unintended consequences of its own.”
In this whitepaper, Panopticon Labs emphasizes:
- The current state of the video game industry’s cybersecurity epidemic
- Historic examples of well-intentioned, but misguided government intervention
- Assumptions on the unintended consequences of government interference
- Tips for how video game industry can self-regulate to avoid government involvement
- Examples of how Panopticon Labs’ technology mitigates cyber risk
