Raising money for charity while playing a fun game on your cellphone -- it sounds easy, and it is. The startup that came up with it hopes the buzz will bring a lot more money to groups in need.
The game is "Zombees: Bee the Swarm." In it, you play as a bee that uses a hairdryer to shoot lasers to take down the bad guys. The goal? Stay alive! "You basically follow Phoebe and other bee heroes as you try to survive the zombie apocalypse," said Rob Slaughter, with the startup Bee the Swarm. He and Logan Duginske came up with the idea. They wanted to tap into people's obsession with smart phones and zombies. Here’s how the charities benefit from you playing the game."We get our money from both ads and in-add purchases. So when somebody clicks on an ad, that's about a dollar that gets donated to charity,” said Slaughter.
The game went live in February and has already raised about a thousand dollars. "So just in the last week we've done things like, raised funds for after school programs for kids. We actually helped 3d print a prosthetic limb for a child," Slaughter said. "To be able to play a game and to do good, it's a no brainer to me,” said Duginske. The two say the goal is to create several more games throughout the year, all different, to attract every kind of gamer out there. "Get some games that are a little more like puzzle games, stuff like that,” said Duginske.
