Hank Green, known for his educational YouTube channels and for founding VidCon in 2010, has gathered a group of online video creators and professionals to announce the Internet Creators Guild, a 501(c)(6) nonprofit corporation organized to serve the thousands of individuals who create online content, both full-time and on an amateur level.
The mission of the ICG is “to connect, inform, represent, and support creators in the industry of online creation.” It will connect creators for discussions on career choices, MCNs, brand deals, and more, as well as provide case studies, strategies, and interviews to assist creators as they navigate the digital media world. The ICG will interface with platforms to give a voice to the creator community and communicate with press to highlight notable moments in the industry.
Board members include:
- Anna Akana: a comic, actress, filmmaker, and online content creator in Los Angeles. She's known for creating weekly comedic content, short films, and serialized shows.
- Olan Rogers: a comedian, filmmaker, animator, and entrepreneur. In addition to online video, he has developed a summer outdoor movie & concert series and clothing store in Nashville.
- Jonathan Katz: an entertainment lawyer and advocate for internet creator rights. He most recently founded Clamour Events to provide safe spaces for creators to connect.
- Aureylian: currently the Lead Community Manager at Twitch. She is also involved in a number of charitable efforts and has been involved with both live and VOD content creation in 2012.
- Satchell Drakes: a video producer and designer living in New York City. He presents analysis on games and films, and is passionate about internet ethics and creative productivity.
- Ashley Mardell: a vlogger with strong perspectives on social justice and a passion for giving a voice to the community of small creators on YouTube.
- Wendy Ayche: an Australian lifestyle creator, who created her channel part-time while having a full-fledged career and believes in sharing her experience in marketing and business.
For its launching phase, the ICG will be funded by a grant from VidCon, and will be supported thereafter by dues paid by members in the amount of $60 per year. Laura Chernikoff, current Guest Manager at VidCon, will be leaving VidCon after this year’s event to become the Executive Director of the ICG.
“Basically, I've always felt like there should be an organization that solely promotes the interests of internet creators and supports them and the industry they are so central to” said Green. “YouTube is often on the side of the creator, as are MCNs, and individual managers and agents, but we are creating a non-profit organization that just has this one goal - to help creators.”
Green is also assembling an Internet Creators Guild advisory board.
“I'm excited to be a part of what I'm confident will become an invaluable resources for creators,” said Anna Akana, board president of the ICG. “Our jobs didn't exist five years ago. Many of us have had to figure out what this new landscape means through trial and error. I hope that the ICG will provide insight on the business aspect of brand deals, contracts, and alternative revenue streams, as well as connecting creative people with similar visions.”
