TEDxNewYork Returns to New York City; Reveals Speaker Line-up for Second Event
New York, NY (PRWEB) September 08, 2016 -- On Saturday, September 10, the second ever TEDxNewYork conference will gather 500 passionate New Yorkers from across all industries and disciplines at the SVA Theatre to celebrate curiosity and ideas in an ode to the world's cultural capital. The independently organized event – licensed by TED – will spotlight 14 speakers and four performers from across disciplines to explore the theme of “Down the Rabbit Hole.”
Launched in 2009, TEDx is a program of locally organized events that bring the community together to share a TED-like experience. To date, there have been more than 16,000 TEDx events hosted around the world. Some of the best talks from TEDx events have gone on to be featured on TED.com and garnered millions of views from audiences across the globe. Talks from TEDxNewYork 2014 have alone been viewed more than 10 million times, including comedian and SNL writer Will Stephen’s satirical talk on how to give a TEDx Talk, which went viral on YouTube and has been seen four million times, and former Rikers Island inmate Ismael Nazario’s talk, which made it on TED.com and has been viewed 1.3 million times.
“2016 has been a tough year in so many ways: a disheartening news cycle, very real and terrifying geopolitical shifts, our own civil and political battles here in the US. We’ll bring leaders of New York together to address some of the challenges we face, and to re-inspire each other to live well and think critically,” says cofounder and executive producer Thu-Huong Ha.
Speakers include:
• Maria Alejandro believes that aging is beautiful; we just have to find ways to live healthily into old age. She’s the director of senior services at East Harlem’s Union Settlement.
• Muneeb Ali is computer scientist building a fairer web with new ways for users to own their own data. He’s the co-founder of blockchain company Blockstack.
• Allison Bishop is a Columbia University professor studying cryptography and complexity theory, and a quantitative researcher at IEX, the US’s newest stock exchange.
• Rebecca Brachman is a neuroscientist and writer working on the first drug to prevent psychiatric disorders like depression and posttraumatic stress disorder.
• Ian Bremmer is a political theorist who wants us to rethink global power. He’s the president of political risk firm Eurasia Group and the author of five books, including his latest, Superpower.
• Joanna Ebenstein is a multidisciplinary artist, death enthusiast, and co-founder of Brooklyn’s Morbid Anatomy Museum.
• Jo Firestone is a comedian and the host of events around New York like the monthly pun competition Punderdome 3000.
• Yale Fox is standing up to corruption in our housing rental system and is the CEO of Rentlogic.
• Adam Galinsky thinks deeply about how we work with and against one another to achieve our goals. He is the chair of the management department at Columbia Business School.
• Chris Jackson is the newly named editor-in-chief of Random House’s One World imprint, where he will breathe life into the works of visionary multicultural writers.
• Cakes Da Killa is a boundary-busting New York rapper.
• Kristin Lee is a violinist with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. She is also the co-founder and artistic director of Emerald City Music in Seattle.
• Matthew Lipman is a violist with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. In 2017 he will debut as a soloist with the Minnesota Orchestra and Illinois Philharmonic.
• Mark S. Luckie works to promote diversity and cross-cultural dialogue in the media as Reddit’s head of media.
• Nkosi Nkululeko is New York City's 2016 youth poet laureate and the author of "Sharp-Edged Vernacular" and "How It Sounded to Squish a Cockroach."
• Youngna Park is the head of product at Tinybop, where she builds beautiful apps for kids.
• Philip Pettit is a political philosopher at Princeton University, where he thinks deeply about republican governments and the nature of freedom.
• Stephanie Spellers is an Episcopal priest and author known for fueling “radical welcome” in churches across the U.S.

• Microsoft Stores (Leadership Partner) will host a number of activations both at TEDxNewYork and at their flagship Microsoft Store in New York. In one installation at TEDxNewYork, Microsoft will ask attendees to answer the question: “What do you hope we’ll achieve in your children’s lifetime?” Answers will be written down on Surface tablets and displayed throughout the event on a digital wall. Microsoft Stores will also host a TEDxNewYork preview event at the flagship store (677 Fifth Avenue) on September 8, 5:30-7:30pm. • MixMag and Smirnoff Sound Collective (Major Partner) will present a lunchtime conversation on “Shifting the Dial on Diversity,” with expert panelists addressing a greater need for diversity and inclusion in dance music – a scene created by marginalized groups as a form of self-expression, tolerance and acceptance. The pair will also present the official TEDxNewYork after party, featuring local artists Cakes Da Killa and Tygapaw and custom-made Smirnoff drinks.
• Culture Amp (Event Partner) will provide the TEDxNewYork audience with a lounge space to relax and network. The data platform will also create a survey to capture how the audience feels about the culture of their workplaces and whether or not they’re comfortable speaking up. Culture Amp will present the results live in their lounge and recapped after the event.
• Glamsquad’s (Event Partner) hair and makeup professionals will prepare speakers for the stage.
