Questline Joins Energy Utility Industry to Recognize 8-1-1 Day
Dublin, Ohio (PRWEB) August 11, 2016 -- “Call before you dig!” That’s the message from Questline and its energy utility industry clients today. Each year on 8/11 Americans are reminded to call the eight-one-one (811) number before digging to ensure underground power lines are marked in advance.
According to Common Ground Alliance, an underground utility line is damaged every six minutes by people digging without first calling 811, placing them at risk. In addition to personal safety, striking a single line can also result in expensive repairs, fines and outages.
“As partners to the U.S. energy utility industry, Questline shares a deep commitment to communicating about how people can mitigate energy-related dangers,” said Questline President Dave Reim. “Today is about helping ensure that every energy utility customer knows to call 811 before digging.”
Incoming 811 calls are routed to local call centers around the U.S. The center notifies the appropriate utility companies of an intent to dig. Professional “locators” are sent to the requested digging site to mark the approximate locations of underground lines with flags, spray paint or both.
Ground erosion, uneven surfaces and even previous projects can affect the depth of utility lines, so call even if you plan to dig just a few inches into the surface. The risk of striking an underground line still exists.
Questline has authored several 811 articles on behalf of its 450+ utility customers. This one illustrates types of underground utility lines and how they are marked with color coding.
