Company C Contemporary Ballet presents ‘Arcane: A Tale of All Hallows’ Eve’ Oct. 21-30 with More Halloween Fun

New choreography, music, dancers, pre-show festival conjure up outstanding family entertainment.

Company C Contemporary Ballet opens its second season of Charles Anderson’s “Arcane: A Tale of All Hollows’ Eve” Oct. 21 for six performances with entertaining new ingredients brewing in its Halloween cauldron and ready to serve.

The new elements Artistic Director Anderson stirred into the bubbling pot include a Halloween festival, which begins in the lobby an hour before the curtains rise. Among other activities, show-goers will have a chance to socialize with the costumed dancers before they’re summoned to stage.

Anderson also added new choreography, collaborated with composer Mike Krisukas (Zen For Primates) to expand the original score, and enhanced the sets and costumes to heighten the ambience and lend depth to Arcane’s story.

The ballet tells the story of Arcane, the celestial star who sits at the hip of the harvest moon. Each Halloween, when the veil between life and death is at its thinnest, Arcane descends to Earth. She brings with her the “Voice of the Voiceless,” which she uses to animate souls trapped in the netherworld, rousing them to revelry and mischief.

Arcane will appear the Cowell Theater at the Fort Mason Center on Oct. 21, 8 p.m.; Oct. 22, 8 p.m.; Oct. 23, 2 p.m.; Oct. 28, 8 p.m.; Oct. 29, 8 p.m.; and Oct. 30, 2 p.m.

New Principal Dancers
All of the principal dancers will be appearing with Company C for the first time. Annali Rose Clevenger will appear in the lead role as Arcane. Rose is an experienced and diverse artist who has performed a wide range of classical and contemporary works over her 17-year professional career. She has danced for Sacramento Ballet, Trey McIntyre Project, Ballet San Jose and Amy Seiwert's Imagery. Among her career highlights, she performed as Juliet in Ron Cunningham's “Romeo and Juliet”, Trey McIntyre's “Wild Sweet Love,” Jorma Elo's “Glow Stop,” Ohad Naharin's “Minus 16,” Val Caniporoli's “4 in the Morning” and Amy Seiwert's “Instructions.” Annali values being in a creative process, exploring life and humanity through movement, and experiencing the beauty of dance and its ability to be inspiring and transformative. In addition to her career as a dancer, Annali is also a fully certified Stott Pilates instructor and is earning her Bachelor of Arts degree through the internationally recognized Liberal Education for Arts Professionals program at St. Mary's College of California.

Ryan Preciado, a former Silicon Valley Ballet dancer, will perform the role of Cornelius, The Raven. He was born in Akron, Ohio where he began dancing at a young age. He attended Miller South School for the Visual and Performing Arts and graduated from Firestone High School. He trained at the University of Akron Dance Institute, School of American Ballet. Upon coming to the Bay area 2013, he became a trainee at Silicon Valley Ballet for the 2013/2014 season. He also has performed with Verb Ballets in Cleveland, Ohio for the 2012/2013 season.

John Frazer will appear as the Dead Groom, and also as a ghost and skeleton in ensemble sections. John began his dance training with the Atlanta Ballet and went on to graduate from the Ballet West Academy. He became a charter member of Ballet West II in 2004, where he danced under Jonas Kage and Peter Christie. In 2006, he joined Ballet West, where he performed both corps and soloist roles by world-renowned choreographers, including Sir Fredrick Ashton, Glen Tetley, Twyla Tharp and Ben Stevenson, O.B.E. John joined Ballet Idaho in 2010 and performed many lead roles, including Romeo in “Romeo and Juliet” and Don Jose in “Carmen.” Under Willy Shives at Ballet San Antonio, he danced various roles, including Captain Hook in “Peter Pan” and the “Flower Festival” pas de deux during the 2015-2016 season.

Anderson drew inspiration for the story, set design and costumes from diverse sources, including the Mexican Day of the Dead, poi ball spinning of New Zealand’s ancient Maori people, and Chinese and Greek mythology.
