Sunshine Coast Announces One Year Anniversary for Onsite SMART Recovery Meetings at its Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment in British Columbia Achieve

Given this positive response, the Centre is planning to expand the service in 2016-2017, with an additional session potentially being open to all residents of Powell River.

SMART Meetings Explained: an Innovative Methodology for Drug Rehabilitation and Alcohol Treatment
While the most commonly known methodology for drug rehab and alcohol treatment is the "12 Step" methodology, Sunshine Coast Health Centre uses alternative methodologies that are non-12 step and based on the "Logos" therapy popularized by Viktor Frankl. The SMART recovery methodology also is a non-12 step methodology, based on four points: 1) building and maintaining motivation, 2) coping with urges, 3) managing thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and 4) living a balanced life.
Celebrating its one year anniversary, Sunshine Coast Health Centre currently hosts SMART Meetings every Wednesday night at 6:30 PM. The space available is the perfect set-up for the open and circular meeting. There are plump maroon couches and a view of the ocean and Texada Island. It creates an open and safe environment for sharing, talking, crosstalk, and feedback in a very inspirational setting. The philosophy of Sunshine Coast Health Centre is to treat the whole person, focusing on a non-12 step methodology that embraces patient trust and empowerment.
Facilitators and Future Plans
The Centre's main facilitator, Courtney, has been doing these meetings for the last six months. She loves it, and is accompanied in the SMART program by four more staff with the training, who can step in and run the meetings as needed. Furthermore, because of available staff support, the Centre is considering starting another regular SMART meeting session in 2016-2017 that would accommodate public members of the Powell River community who might benefit.
