PreemploymentDirectory.com, the Background Screening Information Portal, Releases Year End Report for 2016 Which Highlights Key Issues in Conducting Background Checks
Alpharetta, GA (PRWEB) January 30, 2017 -- PreemploymentDirectory.com, the background screening information portal for Human Resources professionals, today announced the release of their 2016 Year End Report highlighting the top issues that impacted background screening. The report identifies the top stories and news items that appeared in the industry leading and award winning e-magazine, The Background Buzz, and itemizes the most reported issues. Moving up from the second spot last year to the top of the list was the growing number of class action lawsuits alleging violations of the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). Articles about emerging Ban the Box laws had the second highest number of articles.
W. Barry Nixon, COO, PreemploymentDirectory.com and publisher of The Background Buzz, said, “I am dumbfounded that we are still seeing a high number of FCRA class action lawsuits given that most of the cases deal with inappropriate information being included in a company’s ‘Acknowledgement & Consent’ form and/or improper adverse action notification. The FCRA is very specific and clear on the requirements on both of these issues. Why employers haven’t fix this leaves me bewildered.”
Nixon added, “The sexy issue this year was legalized marijuana. With twenty-six states having legalized marijuana for medical use and seven for recreational use it’s the talk of the land as well as a big headache for employers. It will be interesting to see what effect the Trump administration will have on this issue.”
In the 2015 Year End Report we reported that legalization of marijuana made its first appearance amongst the top ranked stories and in 2016 marijuana stories moved up to the third most covered subject.
Rounding out the top five story categories were articles dealing with criminal background checks and e-verify. A new subject that emerged as an issue garnering increased coverage is the growing use of Opioids and their impact on the workplace.
Similar to past years reports this years’ end report highlights the increasingly complex legal compliance environment faced by company’s conducting background checks.
