ArcScan Announces Incorporation of Insight® 100 Device for Ophthalmic Imaging Into Clinic of Dr. Ike Ahmed

ArcScan, Inc., developer of state-of-the-art ophthalmic visualization technology, has announced that Ike Ahmed, MD, will be incorporating the Insight® 100, ArcScan’s FDA 510(k)-cleared precision point-and-shoot ultrasound device for imaging and biometry of the eye, into his clinic at the world-renowned Prism Eye Institute in Ontario, Canada.

ArcScan, Inc., developer of state-of-the-art ophthalmic visualization technology, announced today that Ike Ahmed, MD, will be incorporating the Insight® 100, ArcScan’s FDA 510(k)-cleared precision point-and-shoot ultrasound device for imaging and biometry of the eye, into his clinic at the world-renowned Prism Eye Institute in Ontario, Canada. Indicated for refractive surgical planning and evaluation of anterior segment pathology, the Insight 100 images and measures anterior chamber depth, angle-to-angle width, individual corneal layers, sulcus-to-sulcus width, anterior and posterior capsular surfaces, and more—with micron level precision and repeatability, all in a patient-friendly device.

“One of the reasons I’m most excited about using the Insight 100 in my practice is its ability to see behind the iris and produce images that OCT cannot, such as of the sulcus, ciliary body, capsular bag, crystalline lens, and of an intraocular lens,” said Dr. Ahmed, who is an assistant professor at the University of Toronto, where he also serves as the research fellowship director in the department of ophthalmology and as director of the glaucoma and advanced anterior surgical fellowship. “Also, the efficient approach of ArcScan’s device is more repeatable and reliable than handheld ultrasound biomicroscopy,” he noted.

Dr. Ahmed plans to use the Insight 100 for a variety of applications. For example, in glaucoma assessment, ArcScan’s device is able to assess the angle in glaucoma and differentiate the various mechanisms of angle closure to determine an appropriate treatment strategy. “We find undiagnosed angle closure too often, and current gonioscopy is either not performed enough or well enough,” Dr. Ahmed noted.

In addition to glaucoma assessment, Dr. Ahmed plans to use the Insight 100 for corneal imaging, evaluating anterior segment lesions, and intraocular lens (IOL) assessment—as well as in clinical trials of these various applications. “ArcScan’s technology should be of great benefit in assessing capsular bag dimensions and predicting effective lens position. This will be particularly important as we look toward accommodating IOLs,” said Dr. Ahmed.
