Meridian Cable Contributes to Safer Highways with their Innovations in Commercial Vehicle Wiring
St. Augustine, FL (PRWEB) April 04, 2017 -- Highway safety is a growing concern across the U.S., to reduce accidents on the roadways, new technologies and services are being implemented to track and record data on commercial vehicles. As part of this effort to promote safer roadways, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration announced that electronic data logging devices would be required in all commercial trucks and buses. These data loggers can be thought of as a black box for vehicles, similar to those used in airplanes to record key data.
Former U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx summarized the need for these data loggers, stating that “Since 1938, complex, on-duty/off-duty logs for truck and bus drivers were made with pencil and paper, virtually impossible to verify. This automated technology not only brings logging records into the modern age, it also allows roadside safety inspectors to unmask violations of federal law that put lives at risk.”
As a result of this change in regulations, many companies are now required to have these data loggers installed in their fleet’s vehicles. Meridian Cable’s team was recently contacted by a manufacturer who was in the process of designing these new data loggers for commercial vehicles. The manufacturer did not have the ability to craft custom cables assemblies capable of seamlessly connecting the vehicles’ telemetric systems to their data loggers and needed the Meridian team’s expertise to complete the project.
For many, the creation of these cables was complicated by the rugged nature of commercial vehicles. These vehicles require durable cable assemblies capable of reliably recording data for compliance purposes. Creating sturdy and reliable cable assemblies was simple for a company that values quality the way that Meridian Cable does.
The real challenge was that these cables must connect to a variety of vehicles’ telemetric systems. These vehicles differ vastly in their design, so our team created a set of custom cables with unique customer overmolds. This customized solution made these cables more robust and easier to install, helping logistics companies achieve compliance and safety standards faster.
Meridian’s engineers were able to create designs for the customer to approve, build specific molds and tools, extrude custom cable and create a number of cable assemblies for our client. This project exemplifies what Meridian does best – we work as part of our customer’s engineering department to create exact solutions based on their needs. This doesn’t mean adding unnecessary features or driving up costs, but designing quality solutions to create efficient products for our clients.
