We’re excited to help facilitate the work of the Open Badges community as we move towards deployment of Open Badges 2.0. - Wayne Skipper, Concentric Sky CEO

Real-time verification of Open Badges just got easier with Concentric Sky’s contribution of Badgecheck to IMS Global Learning Consortium (IMS Global), the world leader in EdTech interoperability and innovation. Badgecheck is a software library that has powered the free online Open Badge verification tool since 2015. It will now be made available under an Apache open source license in order to serve as the core of the official IMS Global Open Badges 2.0 Validator.

The contribution of Badgecheck to IMS Global is expected to significantly accelerate the work of the Open Badges community by making it possible for several badging platforms to begin issuing Open Badges over the summer using the newly released 2.0 version of the standard.

“The team at Concentric Sky has been a long-time leader in the open badges ecosystem and we are very happy to receive this code contribution to serve as a foundational component in IMS Global’s official Open Badges Validator,” said Mark Leuba, Vice President of Product Management. “A product's certified compliance to the specification is key to a learner's control of their digital credentials and IMS and its members are committed to the interoperability of Open Badges.”

Version 2.0 of the Open Badges specification is the most significant upgrade since its 2011 launch, making it possible to address dozens of new micro-credential use cases. The new features make Open Badges more flexible and secure, allowing users to more expressively describe any type of educational achievement as a portable and verifiable digital badge.

“Badgecheck was designed to make it easy for anyone to independently verify an Open Badge,” said Concentric Sky CEO, Wayne Skipper. “We’re excited to help facilitate the work of the Open Badges community as we move towards deployment of Open Badges 2.0.”
