NIH “All of Us” Research Program Director Eric Dishman to Kick Off Inaugural 2017 HIMSS Precision Medicine Summit
New York (PRWEB) April 19, 2017 -- HIMSS, producers of the Precision Medicine Summit, announced today that Eric Dishman, director of the National Institutes of Health’s “All of Us” Research Program, will deliver the opening keynote address, “Accelerating Precision Medicine for Everyone: The NIH's "All of Us” Research Program” at the Summit on Monday, June 12, 2017. The HIMSS Precision Medicine Summit, slated for June 12 – 13, 2017 at the Westin Boston Waterfront in Boston, will focus exclusively on the state of precision medicine, a groundbreaking approach to disease prevention and treatment based on people’s individual differences in lifestyle, environment, and biological makeup, including genes.
Eric Dishman is a pioneering leader in the advancement of precision medicine, and is a driving force behind the NIH’s All of Us Research Program, where they’re engaging a group of one million+ U.S. research participants to share biological samples, genetic data and lifestyle information, all linked to their electronic health records. This new model of research puts an emphasis on engaged research participants, responsible data sharing and privacy protection, which will lay the foundation for using precision medicine in clinical practice. Dishman’s keynote address will provide insight into the groundbreaking program, while also addressing the state of precision medicine at the federal level, and the promise of precision medicine and how it will be delivered. Dishman will also share his own story as a 23-year kidney cancer patient -- now cured thanks to efforts in precision medicine that identified the right course of treatment; the experience providing him unique insight into the opportunities precision medicine will bring for disease prevention, treatment, and ongoing patient care.
The 2017 Precision Medicine Summit will bring together leading researchers, practitioners and healthcare industry professionals to discuss how precision medicine can and will be rolled into primary care to provide better levels of patient care. Discussion topics for the two-day program include data challenges, gene therapy, ethical issues and social determinants, case studies and successful strategies. The program will provide attendees with a first-hand perspective on the current state of precision medicine, and when and how far away the healthcare industry is from it reaching the general population.
