Alaska Communications and Boys & Girls Clubs – Alaska Seek Nominations for Summer of Heroes Program
Anchorage, Alaska (PRWEB) April 25, 2017 -- Today, Alaska Communications announces the kickoff of its seventh annual Summer of Heroes program in partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs – Alaska. The scholarship program recognizes five young Alaskan heroes, plus one from the Employee Program, who are making noteworthy contributions to his or her Alaska community.
Each selected hero receives a $1,500 scholarship through the UA College Savings Plan and a trip to a special recognition ceremony at the Alaska State Fair. In addition to the scholarship program, Alaska Communications has pledged to donate $25 to Boys & Girls Clubs – Alaska for every new Unlimited or Business Internet sign up between April 25 and July 17, 2017, up to $15,000 total.
Since 2011, Alaska Communications has contributed a total of $90,000 to Boys & Girls Clubs – Alaska through the Summer of Heroes program. One of the leading youth development organizations in the state, Boys & Girls Clubs – Alaska provides high-quality programming for nearly 10,000 youth in 26 communities.
“Our team as Boys & Girls Clubs – Alaska clubhouses throughout the state work with inspiring, motivated youth on a daily basis,” said Alana Humphrey, CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs – Alaska. “We’re grateful to partner with Alaska Communications on this program to honor some of these individuals and bring awareness to how they’re making positive differences in their communities.”
As a special tribute this year, the 2017 Summer of Heroes logo is inspired by 2016 hero, Tatiana Ticknor. Tatiana channeled her passion for native dancing and language into her work with the Native Student Leadership Council at her high school and more broadly in her community. Most notably, Tatiana participated on a panel with President Obama at the Tribal Nations Conference at the White House.
Alaska Communications and Boys & Girls Clubs – Alaska encourage anyone to nominate the young heroes in their lives. In addition, a youth fitting the requirements of the program can fill out an application to nominate themselves. A hero can be any youth, ages 6 to 18, who has made a significant contribution to his or her community through acts of kindness or bravery.
“Supporting youth development and education throughout Alaska—and helping the future leaders of our state reach their goals—is something that is important to us at Alaska Communications,” said Anand Vadapalli, Alaska Communications president and CEO. “We’re proud to be partnering with Boys & Girls Clubs – Alaska for the seventh year and we can’t wait to meet the 2017 heroes this summer.”
Alaskans can nominate themselves or others by filling out the online nomination form by the deadline of July 17. Visit the Summer of Heroes website for program rules and details about the nomination process.
