Dr. Jwo Pan, University of Michigan Professor, Honored with SAE International Medal of Honor
WARRENDALE, Pa. (PRWEB) April 28, 2017 -- Dr. Jwo Pan, Mechanical Engineering Professor at University of Michigan, is recipient of the 2017 SAE International Medal of Honor. Dr. Pan received his medal at the annual Awards Ceremony during the SAE International WCX: World Congress Experience, held April 4-6 in Detroit.
The Medal of Honor, established in 1986, is presented annually and is SAE International’s most prestigious award. The award recognizes an SAE International member for his or her unique and significant contributions to SAE International and is funded through the SAE Foundation.
Dr. Pan served as Director of Center for Automotive Structural Durability Simulation funded by Ford Motor Company. He also served as Director for Center for Advanced Polymer Engineering Research at University of Michigan. He is an SAE International Fellow and American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Fellow. One of his most significant contributions to SAE was the addition of an entirely new group of technically capable members who have taken on leadership roles on various SAE committees, which have resulted in significant improvement of the quality of conference and journal papers.
Dr. Pan has published two books, “Mechanics Modeling of Sheet Metal Forming,” published by SAE International, and “Fatigue Testing, Analysis and Design: Theory and Applications,” published by Elsevier. He has 180 journal papers and 130 conference papers on various research topics; and has made original contributions to the development of plasticity, fracture and fatigue theories for modeling of automotive materials and components, and generated new innovative modeling tools for various types of welds, crankshaft fillet rolling, sheet metal forming, vehicle/barrier crashes, bearing design, and lithium-ion battery cells and modules. Dr. Pan has been recognized as a leading expert in the diverse automotive engineering areas of welding/joining, crash, fatigue/durability, and sheet metal forming.
He received the SAE Forest R. McFarland Award; three SAE Arch T. Colwell Merit Awards; the SAE Henry Ford II Distinguished Award for Excellence in Automotive Engineering; the ASME Sam Y. Zamrik Literature Award; and the ASEE (American Society for Engineering Education) Archie Higdon Distinguished Educator Award for his outstanding teaching.
Dr. Pan received his BS in Mechanical Engineering from National Taiwan University; and his ScM and PhD in Solid and Structural Mechanics from Brown University.
