March’s Employment Growth Down Over February, January
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) April 30, 2017 -- March’s total nonfarm payroll employment grew by 98,000 jobs last month, a 55 percent decrease over February’s employment growth, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Economic Situation Report released on Friday, April 7, 2017.
“Employment gains hit 216,000 jobs in February and 219,000 jobs in January, a significant difference compared to last month’s performance,” said Jay Rollins, owner of JobsWeb.com, a leading employment website. “March’s lackluster job performance is a result of slower growth in a few sectors, like education and health services, which only gained 16,000 jobs last month compared to the 66,000 jobs gained in February. The retail industry also lost 30,000 jobs.”
The professional and business services sector gained 56,000 jobs last month, in line with average gains of the past year. Within the sector, increases occurred within services to buildings and dwellings (+17,000) and in architectural and engineering services (+7,000).
Healthcare gained 14,000 jobs, slightly below the 20,000 jobs-per-month average reported in the first quarter of the year. Last month, increases occurred in hospitals (+9,000) and outpatient care centers (+6,000).
Financial activities gained 9,000 jobs in March, a slight increase in job gains over the previous month. Over the last 12 months, the financial activities sector has grown by 178,000 jobs.
Employment in other major industries, including manufacturing, wholesale trade, transportation and warehousing, information, leisure and hospitality, and government showed minimal change over the month.
The unemployment rate decreased by 0.2 percentage point to 4.5 percent in March, while the number of unemployed persons declined by 326,000 to 7.2 million. Both measures were down over the year.
