As Derby Approaches, Kentucky Racing Clinic Garners Honor
Washington, DC (PRWEB) May 05, 2017 -- The American Academy of Nursing today announced the designation of Whitney Nash, PhD, APRN, and Sara Robertson, DNP, APRN, FNP, as Academy Edge Runners for their model, the Kentucky Racing Health Services Center. The Academy’s Raise the Voice Edge Runner initiative recognizes nurse-designed models of care that impact cost, improve quality and enhance patient satisfaction.
The Kentucky Racing Health Services Center is a not for profit, nurse-designed and nurse-staffed clinic providing the full spectrum of primary care annually to 1500-1800 low wage workers and their families in Kentucky’s thoroughbred horse racing industry. In addition to four primary care nurse practitioners, the clinic also has a women’s health nurse practitioner and a psychiatric nurse practitioner. Located just one block from Churchill Downs, the clinic provides comprehensive care for a flat rate fee of $5.00, which includes lab work
“Just days in advance of the Kentucky Derby is a wonderful time to celebrate Drs. Nash and Robertson’s nurse-designed clinic, the Kentucky Racing Health Services Center,” said Academy President Bobbie Berkowitz, PhD, NEA-BC, FAAN. “There are untold numbers of hard working people behind the scenes in the thoroughbred racing industry who struggle to obtain affordable and accessible health care. Drs. Nash and Robertson are to be applauded for their commitment to this underserved population."
The Kentucky Racing Health Services Center is affiliated with the Kentucky Health and Welfare Fund, which assists with funding obtained from uncashed parimutuel tickets at horse racing tracks throughout Kentucky, and the University of Louisville, which provides students from a variety of fields the opportunity to obtain experience while serving the needs of people in the community.
“It is a privilege to be recognized with such a prestigious designation, and we are honored to serve one of the most vulnerable populations,” said Dr. Nash, founding director of the clinic and associate dean of practice and service, University of Louisville School of Nursing. Dr. Robertson is the clinic’s current director and an assistant professor at the University of Louisville School of Nursing.
