Study.com Wins $100k Inspire Grant to Expand Tuition-Free College Program
Mountain View, CA (PRWEB) May 15, 2017 -- Study.com has received a $100,000 Inspire Mountain View Challenge grant to expand its tuition-free college program, Mountain View Working Scholars. The grant, sponsored by Google, LinkedIn, Symantec, and Synopsys, encourages and supports programs designed to make Mountain View a more compassionate and equitable community.
“The Working Scholars program is helping those who live and work in the city of Mountain View address the challenges of economic inclusion and diversity by providing working adults a tuition-free path to a college degree,” says Mountain View Mayor Ken Rosenberg. “Building a better-educated community provides more opportunity for everyone, from companies seeking skilled employees to individuals pursuing higher paying jobs and a better future.”
As the economy continues to evolve and new jobs are created and lost, education is becoming an increasingly crucial aspect of workforce development. On average, a bachelor’s degree increases earning potential by as much as 56% and unlocks a wider range of higher paying jobs. In Mountain View, more than 40% of adults over the age of 25 do not have a bachelor’s degree. This makes the Working Scholars program incredibly valuable to the community.
Mountain View Working Scholars, which is a joint effort between online course provider Study.com, the Mountain View Chamber of Commerce and Thomas Edison State University, leverages partnerships between the private, public, and non-profit sectors to remove the most prevalent barriers to higher education: skyrocketing tuition costs and inconvenient course schedules. Through the program, working adults can earn a bachelor’s degree from an accredited 4-year university entirely online without out-of-pocket costs.
“It is amazing to see all the innovative programs that participated in the Inspire Challenge to make Mountain View an even better place to live,” says Adrian Ridner, CEO and Co-Founder of Study.com. “We are honored to receive this grant. It will help us expand the Working Scholars program and help more people in the community turn their dream of earning a bachelor’s degree turn into a reality.”
Inspire Mountain View Challenge is managed by the Los Altos Community Foundation, which serves the communities of Los Altos and Mountain View. A panel of judges selected 18 grant finalists out of 40 total proposals. The final grant winners were selected by public voting which ran for three weeks in April.
