The Corpus Christi Independent School District is embarking upon a major infrastructure improvement plan, and that includes several sports venues upgrading to AstroTurf®. Five CCISD high school football fields and one soccer field will receive brand new playing surfaces from the pioneering artificial turf company.

Carroll, King, Moody, Ray, and Veterans Memorial high schools are each scheduled to have cutting edge AstroTurf fields installed this summer. Additionally, the soccer pitch at Cabaniss Athletic Complex will be converted to AstroTurf. The football stadium at Cabaniss already features AstroTurf, as does Miller High School’s Buccaneer Stadium.

“We are thankful to our voters and excited about moving forward with this project,” said CCISD Athletic Director Brenda Marshall. “We’re looking forward to welcoming our CCISD student athletes and community to beautiful and fresh fields this coming season.”

All of the new fields will be covered with the AstroTurf RootZone 3D3 Blend product. This premium turf system is comprised of high micron monofilament, slit film, and patented RootZone fibers with a sand and rubber infill. The combination creates a playing surface that delivers the durability needed for high usage while maintaining game-day good looks.

Swank Sports, a certified AstroTurf distributor, will oversee conversion from natural grass to AstroTurf for all six projects, beginning on June 1st. The plans call for over 500,000 square feet of turf to be installed by the end of July. That’s the equivalent of covering thirteen acres in AstroTurf in two months time!

Purchase of these new fields was made possible by a $194 million, voter-approved bond that passed last November. The majority of the funds will be used for academic facility construction in the district, with a portion directed for athletic facility improvements including the new athletic field conversions.
