Sometimes urine appears cloudy, which can be alarming as it is out of the ordinary. FindaTopDoc investigated why urine is sometimes cloudy and the reasons behind cloudy urine. The following was found:

What causes cloudy urine?

There are a number of reasons that explain why urine can appear cloudy. Firstly, cloudy urine can be caused by diet. If a person has increased phosphate in his or her urine, it might look cloudy or hazy. Increased phosphate can be a result of drinking a lot of milk and consuming high levels of milk products. Phosphate supplements and too much vitamin D can also result in cloudy urine.

A number of foods can actually lead to cloudy urine, typically foods that have oxalic acid in them. These include spinach, tea, animal fats, nuts and rhubarb. Other dietary factors that cause cloudy urine are low levels of calcium and vitamin B6.

Diseases and conditions linked to cloudy urine

Besides diet, there are certain diseases and conditions that can cause cloudy urine. These include hyperparathyroidism and genetic disorders like primary hyperoxaluria. Patients with intestinal diseases such as Crohn's disease, chronic pancreatitis and cystic fibrosis often have cloudy urine. Additionally, after a bypass surgery patients commonly experience cloudy urine.

Some illnesses and diseases cause large amounts of leukocytes in the urine, which makes it look hazy or cloudy. These conditions include strep infections, kidney problems, tuberculosis, sepsis and Kawasaki disease. When there is an increased secretion of proteins in the urine, it is called proteinuria, and it can cause the urine to be cloudy as well.

Additional factors that can lead to cloudy urine

Other conditions that may cause the urine to appear cloudy are emotional stress, exposure to heat or cold, and strenuous physical activity. Many women experience cloudy urine during pregnancy, too, which is usually no cause for concern. For more about cloudy urine, please visit FindaTopDoc.com.
