The article was a great eye-opener to anyone who’s thinking about investing in a retirement account.

With only some 31% of American adults holding an IRA of any sort, American IRA CEO Jim Hitt took to the American IRA blog recently with some tips on how investors can utilize a Self-Directed IRA to become a “richer retiree.”

The article was a response to an Investors.com article that explained the benefits of using these retirement accounts to expand a retirement nest egg. These tips included tax-deferred growth on investments, tax deductions, greater control over retirement assets, and even low IRA costs.

“The article was a great eye-opener to anyone who’s thinking about investing in a retirement account,” said Jim Hitt. “And since there’s a startlingly low amount of American adults who hold an IRA, I wanted to spread the word. These retirement accounts have tremendous advantages that help people build real wealth over time, and far too few Americans are taking advantage of these benefits.”

Another aspect Jim Hitt was quick to point out: by keeping a separate account for retirement investments, there is a psychological advantage. Investors are far less likely to touch these accounts since they’re not readily available, which in turn promotes their long-term use for exponential gains over time. “Think of it sort of like having a savings account with a specific goal,” said Jim Hitt. “By keeping it separate from your normal accounts, you remove the temptation to touch this part of your wealth. It also inspires investors to keep on investing and watch that separate account grow.”

Jim Hitt also pointed out the advantages of using a Self-Directed IRA specifically. With a Self-Directed IRA, there are a lot of freedoms afforded to the investor, including a wide variety of legitimate investment types. Investors can even hold real estate within an IRA. Other options include precious metals and even stock in private companies.

“There are a lot of ways to become a rich retiree,” said Jim Hitt. “The Self-Directed IRA is one of the most powerful tools along that journey.”
