New Findings on Joint Replacements in Women Underscore Need for Gender-Specific Care
Fort Lauderdale, FL (PRWEB) May 23, 2017 -- An April 2017 study published in The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery showed that women experience an increased rate of hypersensitivity to the metals contained in joint implants than men. The study is further evidence that women have gender-specific medical needs when selecting a hospital for joint replacement surgery. To help women find the top hospitals for orthopedic care, the Women’s Choice Award has identified America’s Best Hospitals for Orthopedics for 2017.
Besides the most recent findings, a study reported in The Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons showed clear gender differences in musculoskeletal disease. Structural anatomy differences, hormones, and genetics are factors in optimizing care for male vs. female orthopedic patients.
Risk also plays a role in gender differences as it has been reported by the National Osteoporosis Foundation that one in two women and up to one in four men will break a bone in their lifetime due to osteoporosis. For women, the incidence is greater than that of heart attack, stroke, and breast cancer combined.
“As research has shown, women are at higher risk of complications from hip or knee replacement surgery and have different medical requirements,” said Delia Passi, founder and CEO of the Women’s Choice Award. “America’s Best Hospitals for Orthopedics gives women a trusted referral resource to help them choose a hospital proven for clinical excellence that also recognizes their specific healthcare needs.”
The methodology used to select America’s Best Hospitals for Orthopedics is unique in that it evaluates Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey results along with primary research about women’s healthcare preferences. Award recipients are also measured on their incidence of surgical complications and infections, including:
• A wound that splits open after surgery
• Accidental cuts and tears
• Deaths from serious treatable complications
• Rate of complications for knee or hip replacement patients
• Catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI)
• Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureu (MRSA) infections
A hospital must have arthroscopy, joint replacement and spine surgery orthopedic services available to patients, onsite physical therapy, and an MRI in order to qualify for the award. It is the only award recognizing excellence in orthopedics based on robust criteria that consider patient satisfaction and clinical excellence.
