Leading cataract and refractive surgeon, Jeffrey Martin, MD has been awarded the ‘2017 Doctor of Distinction’ award for helping set new standards in the field of ophthalmology and for his generous efforts to give back to the local communities of Long Island, according to Long Island Pulse Magazine who recently published their 2017 Doctor of Distinction list.

In their ongoing efforts to help the general public gain access to leading physicians in 10 specified areas of medicine, Pulse Magazine invited professionals in specific areas of medicine to recognize peers who are leaders in their field in a process they term ‘experts choosing experts.’ Over the course of several months, the public is then invited to vote online for their preferred provider in one the 10 designated fields of medicine. After months of online voting, Dr. Martin was recognized as the ‘Doctor of Distinction’ for ophthalmology.

“As a longtime resident of Long Island, I am quite familiar with Pulse magazine and their efforts to help the public make a more informed decision about their healthcare and their physician selection process,” said Dr. Martin. “I am truly humbled to be nominated by my peers for the ‘Doctor of Distinction’ award and honored by all of the voting public across Long Island who appreciate our commitment to patient care here at SightMD.”

Dr. Martin is the son of pioneering eye surgeon, Sidney Martin, MD who founded North Shore Eye Care more than 50 years ago and had a profound impact on the young Jeffrey Martin while growing up on Long Island. “I used to ride my bike to my father’s ophthalmology office, sit back, drink a Coke and watch him interact with patients,” said Dr. Martin. “For years, I thought I had an unlimited amount of aunts, uncles and cousins because of the way my father would interact and treat his patients. I remember him having great conversations with his patients about their families and I just assumed they were part of our family.”

Years later, Dr. Jeffrey Martin would join his father in practice and fully embraced the concept of ‘treating patients like family.’ “The way I practice medicine today is based on my father’s personal approach to eye care,” he said. “He made every patient encounter very personal.”

These days, Dr. Martin is focused on growing that practice while maintaining an intimate, small-town feel. “When I joined, we had one small office and I was the third ophthalmologist. Now we are going on twenty-five offices and sixty physicians, but that relationship of that one patient with that one doctor still drives me.”

A full commitment to provide his patients with the best care requires Martin to stay constantly up to date on the latest technologies. “We are able to care for our patients in the office with high tech diagnostic testing and leading edge technology,” said Dr. Martin who has used one such method at the Northport, VA hospital for 18 years. “Teaching cataract surgery instills the need to always know what is most current in surgical technique and technology, and also drives me to know what is next.”

The Smithtown native continues to expand the reach of his practice to be able to deliver high-quality care to patients across the region. His new practice SightMD - a merger of North Shore Eye Care and Long Island Eye Surgical Care - has locations throughout Long Island, Queens and Manhattan. “Regardless of our expansion and growth moving forward, our dedication to one-on-one personal quality care will remain at the core of our mission at SightMD,” he said.

SightMD is New York’s fastest growing integrated ophthalmic provider group, offering patients the convenience of 21 locations across the greater Long Island / New York metropolitan area and access to more than 50 ophthalmic surgeons and specialists. It was formed with the merger between North Shore Eye Care and Long Island Eye Surgical Care.

The doctors and staff of SightMD represent Long Island’s most established full-service comprehensive eye care provider. This year they are celebrating 53 years of eye care excellence since Dr. Sidney Martin founded North Shore Eye Care in 1962. SightMD is the official LASIK Providers of the New York Mets. Many of their doctors have been voted ‘TOP DOCTORS’ in the New York Metro Area by Castle Connolly and North Shore Eye Care has earned ‘Best Of Long Island’ honors for the past few years.
