Conax Technologies’ Patented Solution Eliminates Premature Sensor Failure
Buffalo, NY (PRWEB) June 07, 2017 -- Conax Technologies has received a patent for its exclusive Spring Loaded Exhaust Gas Sensor. Their unique solution has proven successful in eliminating premature failure of exhaust gas sensors in 7F and 9F class turbines.
Rick Lyon, Global Accounts Manager in Conax Technologies’ Power Generation and Rotating Equipment division said, “It’s a problem that people have been trying to solve for years. There were a lot of ideas that were tried, but none were successful—until now.”
The Challenge
As temperatures rise in the turbine, the radiation shield and sensor sheath of standard exhaust gas sensors expand at different rates. A gap forms between the seat in the radiation shield and the stop on the sensor, causing the sensor to vibrate due to gas flow velocities, input vibrations and thermal expansion mismatch from the turbine. The tip of the sensor then breaks, causing the sensor to fail and the gas turbine to trip.
A patented solution with a record of success
Conax builds their patented Spring Loaded Exhaust Gas Sensors to withstand gas flow velocities and input vibrations in 7F and 9F turbines.
The difference is a high temperature compression spring that is inserted between two spacer tubes. The spring dampens the vibration and keeps the temperature sensor tip seated within the radiation shield to avoid premature sensor failure.
According to Lyon, “The increased stability that the spring provides ensures the sensor tips won’t break, so the turbines can run longer without the risk of premature sensor failure. Customers had been using them while the patent was pending, and the sensors have proven to significantly increase sensor life and provide thousands of hours of field operation without failure. Plus, we made sure they’re interchangeable with OEM parts and tested to OEM specifications.”
