This month, two all-female soccer teams will battle it out for 90 minutes on the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. If they succeed, they’ll break the Guinness World Record for the highest altitude soccer game ever played. The players, from more than ten countries, include US National Lori Lindsey, former Canadian National Sasha Andrews, former German World Cup star Petra Landers, former Afghan National captain Zahra Mahmoodi, former FIFA World Cup referee Jacqui Hurford, pro players and competitive amateurs from Argentina, France, Egypt, Jordan, Mexico, the UK and the United Arab Emirates.
Knowing the importance of such an initiative, director Tamara Rosenfeld and producer Amirose Eisenbach have teamed up to highlight this effort in the form of a documentary feature.
“Radiant J. is committed to elevating women and creating content that can create positive, social impact,” said Amirose Eisenbach, founder of Radiant J. Productions. “This documentary encompasses all of that. My hope is that we can create more awareness and inspire people to keep challenging the patriarchy.”
“There is a movement in the world now addressing female equality and the challenges we face as women,” said Tamara Rosenfeld, founder of Rosenfeld Films. “These soccer players are pioneers, showing that women from around the globe can come together to accomplish what is seemingly impossible.”
The Equal Playing Field initiative formally launched on March 8, 2017 on International Women’s Day, in an effort to increase opportunity, equality and respect for women seeking to play or work in sport. The week after the match, EPF will work with local teams and organizations in ten countries to host soccer clinics to help advance women’s soccer development globally.
“Playing a soccer match at this altitude has never been done before,” said Laura Youngson, Equal Playing Field’s co-founder. “We want to break a record to inspire other women and girls to keep challenging the inequalities in sport. Sport brings friendships and community, commitment and leadership, strength and health. No girl should miss out on those benefits because of her gender.”
The tagline for the Equal Playing Field initiative is, “Opportunity, equality and respect. Nothing more, nothing less.” The filmmakers hope to make strides towards this goal for future generations of women everywhere.
