Dave, and his wife of 42 years, Charlene, had enjoyed a fairy tale, story-book romance, courtship and marriage. And then in year 21, instead of entering the “empty-nest” phase of their lives together, like they had planned, Charlene complained about a headache that just wouldn’t go away. By the 4th morning, before she could visit the doctor, she suffered a massive stroke that left her severely speech impaired and paralyzed on her right side.
The grief process for them was not pretty. Anger and depression took its toll on their marriage and their lives for two years. When Charlene finally accepted her disability, and her “new normal,” she started becoming her old self again. Still unable to speak or walk, she reinvented herself, and decided that she was going to do all of the activities that she did before her stroke.
At that time, Dave realized that there are over 100 million caregivers in the U.S. that needed to know what he learned (the hard way) -- don’t give up, get support, and put your needs FIRST, like the airlines tell us, "Put your own oxygen mask on FIRST!".
