Backbone Connect joins Westminster City Council in their Connected Voucher Scheme
(PRWEB UK) 4 September 2017 -- London-based Managed Services Provider, Backbone Connect, has called on all SMEs in the London Borough of Westminster to urgently investigate whether they could benefit from new Westminster City Council-awarded funding of up to £2,000 to improve their internet connectivity.
Each eligible business could receive this funding towards the upgrade or installation of a new gigabit-capable broadband connection as part of the new Connected Westminster scheme to improve the internet connectivity for businesses in the borough, launching on August 24th 2017.
It is estimated that poor internet connectivity costs the UK economy more than £11bn every year in lost productivity, and a 2016 study for EEF found that poor internet connections are the biggest threat to growth . The Westminster City Council sees the provision of futureproof broadband as essential to help businesses improve productivity and break down barriers to growth.
Cllr Jonathan Glanz, Lead Member for the Shared Economy, Westminster City Council, explains further: “We are committed to increasing the provision of cost-effective, ultrafast broadband by working with broadband providers to improve connectivity, as part of our ‘City for All’ priority. This in turn will enable SME businesses in Westminster to grow, increase productivity and access new markets which are of fundamental importance to London’s position as a leading global city”.
The demand for high-performance connectivity for businesses, coupled with Westminster’s position as one of London’s leading business areas, makes the Connected Westminster initiative crucial to the future development of the borough and of the city itself.
Cllr Robert Davis, MBE DL, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Business, Culture and Heritage, Westminster City Council, explains: “Westminster is a national global centre of employment and industry, containing more businesses and employees than any other London borough. With 47,165 businesses and 697,400 jobs and with an expected 14% projected employee growth between 2016 and 2041, which illustrates the significance of Westminster’s contribution to London’s economy and our need for ultrafast broadband, so that we can continue to be the best place in the UK to start and grow a business.”
With more than 47,000 businesses operating in the borough and only 1,250 grants available, the scheme will be limited to early applicants. As one of the connectivity suppliers approved by the City of Westminster Council under the scheme, Backbone Connect is therefore making an urgent call for all Westminster SMEs to check immediately whether they are eligible to secure funding.

FIVE SIMPLE STEPS
Backbone Connect is aiming to make it easy for businesses to benefit from the scheme. Its five-point plan consists of:
• Call the Backbone Connect’s dedicated Connection Voucher Support Line on 020 3130 9470 to check eligibility
• Complete the simple Connection Voucher application form – the Backbone Connect team can help with this
• Once eligibility has been verified, businesses can order a 1Gb-capable service at the initial speed they require (minimum 30Mbps). Again, the Backbone Connect team can support businesses in understanding the speed and size of connection they need.
• The service is installed, usually within 90 days
• Setup costs are reimbursed by Westminster City Council

In its 2016 Autumn Statement , the UK Government made clear it saw improved broadband connections as an essential part of the solution for closing the UK’s productivity gap.
