Northwest roots with national reach
Since launching, Cole and Wendt—who stepped away from positions with established regional recruiting firms—have been adamant about staying in the Pacific Northwest, while expanding their focus across the country. As they see it, it makes sense in today’s mobile environment.
“Technology has completely broken down the barriers that used to keep recruiters at bay,” Wendt says, who previously enjoyed a solid career in technology sales and leadership. “We rely on an old school work ethic, but we also use the tools available to find candidates and support businesses from anywhere.”
Teamwork and due diligence
“There are a lot of good recruiters out there, but there’s also a ton of variety,” says Cole, who, prior to his career as a recruiter, led a series of successful business ventures in personal services and hospitality. “It’s tough for HR professionals and business owners to tell the difference, especially when time is tight.”
Cowen Partners’ in the trenches mentality and discipline, along with their internal vetting and review process, help them identify stronger candidate matches in less time.
“A lot of recruiters focus on quantity,” Cole adds. “We focus on delivering candidates who bring the right experience and cultural fit, and are open to making a career more.”
Ongoing guidance from an advisory board
Another key difference in the company’s makeup is its advisory board, which provides a broader perspective to their work on the client side.
“The board is an extension of the types of checks and balances that exist in our company’s DNA,” Wendt explains. Composed of a diverse group of business executives, board members are engaged in many facets of Cowen Partners’ efforts: from advising employees, to providing direct consulting services for business clients. “They’re essential in helping us provide clients with the results they want.”
Different models for flexibility and results
Cowen Partners works on contingent, retainer, and hybrid search models. This flexibility helps business utilize their services in ways that align with their bottom lines—as well as their desired time-to-fill.
“The industry average time-to-fill right now is 52 days,” Cole says. “It doesn’t matter what kind of business you are, that’s a long time to have a hole in your org chart. We’d like to knock as much as two weeks off that number if we can.”
