USB-C Compatible Mobile Power Accessory Sales Soar in the U.S., As New Devices Require Consumers to Switch, According to NPD
Port Washington, NY (PRWEB) September 07, 2017 -- According to The NPD Group’s Retail Tracking Service, unit sales of USB-C compatible mobile power accessories[1] have more than doubled from the first quarter of 2017 (Jan.- March) to the second quarter (April- June) in the U.S. When compared to Q2 2016, sales in Q2 2017 increased more than 10 times, primarily driven by the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ launch this April.
USB-C is the next generation of power and connectivity for a wide range of mobile and computing devices. While dollar sales of mobile power accessories with USB-C compatibility have steadily increased year-to-date, sales of the same type devices with micro-USB compatibility are down 10 percent versus the year prior. Overall, the switch to USB-C has led to a year-to-date revenue increase of 16 percent for mobile power products that are USB-C or micro-USB compatible, underscoring the ability of new connectivity and power options to deliver new revenue to the accessories market.
Of USB-C compatible mobile power accessories, unit sales of USB-C charger/sync cables have seen the highest unit and dollar sales in Q2. USB-C charger/sync cable unit sales have grown 86 percent from Q1 to Q2 2017. Additionally, data from NPD’s Retail Tracking Service indicates that early in the launch of a new connectivity type, consumers are showing an increased demand for longer cables. In Q2, USB-C compatible cables six feet and above hold 59 percent of unit sales, while micro-USB compatible cables of the same size make up just 26 percent of unit sales.
“Transitions to new power and connection types typically happen very fast, and are propelled by strong product launches for new and compelling devices, such as the Galaxy S8 and S8+,” said Stephen Baker, vice president, industry analyst for The NPD Group. “These transitions offer a great opportunity for manufacturers and retailers to upsell and attach the next-generation products at attractive pricing, before the inevitable commoditization sets in.”
