Michelle Amt joins VMDO Architects as Director of Sustainability.

I can’t think of a more exciting group to explore sustainable opportunities with than VMDO, a firm dedicated to creating high performance learning environments that will inspire our next generation of leaders to think differently.

VMDO Architects, an architectural firm specializing in design for educational clients and municipalities, welcomes sustainability advocate Michelle Amt, AIA, LEED AP to the firm in the role of Director of Sustainability.

A seasoned professional with 20 years of national and international experience overseeing a wide range of projects focused on sustainable design, Michelle offers a commitment to critical inquiry complemented by a talent for fostering team-oriented solutions. Prior to VMDO, Michelle served as Chief of Staff for William McDonough, a well-known sustainability visionary and architect, and was a Director at William McDonough + Partners, his architectural firm. She has spearheaded sustainable design, management, and research initiatives broadly in the field and for specific clients such as NASA, Google, and the GSA.

As Director of Sustainability, Michelle will build on VMDO’s dedication to sustainable design excellence to facilitate design dialogue, lead research and educational efforts, and achieve sustainability goals across all projects. She will ensure that VMDO’s compliance with the AIA’s 2030 Commitment leads to further innovation in the fields of health and wellness, building performance, and zero-energy and evidence-based design.

“In the right hands, a robust sustainability agenda unlocks new areas for design innovation,” explains Michelle. “It expands the definition of design quality to include both short and long term effects on humans and their surrounding ecosystems. It deepens the connections between our buildings, their local and global communities, and the natural world. It fosters discussion within our profession about the larger meaning of what we make and why we make it—and spurs us to lead other industries in defining how to design with future generations in mind. I can’t think of a more exciting group to explore these opportunities with than VMDO, a firm dedicated to creating high performance learning environments that will inspire our next generation of leaders to think differently.”

“We eagerly welcome Michelle to the VMDO team,” shares Managing Principal, Terry Forbes. “Her thoughtful and synergistic approach to connecting people and places through sustainable design will strengthen VMDO’s history of success in the industry and commitment to providing meaningful solutions to clients. Complementing the firm’s focus on education and community, Michelle will bring sustainability foremost to the table and ensure that our conversations start and end with our end users—students who are the future stewards of our planet.”
